With several series wrapping up the past month or so, the load will be leveling off once again to my old average of 3-5 discs. That, and I plan to be a little more choosy from here on out: as far as brand new releases through the end of the year, I'll be buying Haibane Renmei and Someday's Dreamers, but waiting on Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful and Figure 17. That'll allow for a little extra money to spend on the inevitable flood of releases that'll come early next year. I'm looking forward to a more relaxed anime buying and watching experience. Plus, I need to go back and re-watch some of the 200 discs I already have!

The story is occasionally a bit too contrived in some places in order to pursue a message of "humans suck because we hate things." But the budding "relationship" between Hayama and Mutio seems to negate most of the negative arguments made by the story. The DVD release makes Bandai look like they just rushed to get this out the door. The four episodes are still stretched unnecessarily over two double-sided DVDs. The only improvement from buying them separately is the third DVD of extras, which includes several interesting things, one of which is cut-scene footage from the Blue Submarine No. 6 PSX game which fills in a few gaps in the overall storyline.

Was going to write this last night, but the browser crashed and I was too tired to retype. I plowed through the Blue Submarine No. 6 box set last night and I thought it was a very good story: it goes against the "beautiful but shallow" hallmark of Gonzo Studios by being beautiful but a little bit deeper. It also marks a turning point in CG integration in anime from the older, poor-looking Zoids and Initial D to the newer, more beautiful Cowboy Bebop, Love Hina, Macross Zero and Last Exile. The CG is still obvious in Blue Submarine No. 6, but it looks good and blends beautiful ocean blues with rusting mechanical designs. It's a great study in contrasts.
